West Side Programs Counselor

SCHEDULE: Between 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
LOCATION: At various locations on the West Side
SALARY RANGE: $25.00 and up (based on experience)
STATUS: Seasonal Part Time/Non-Exempt

POSITION SUMMARY

Provides direct supervision of a group of children in our afterschool and seasonal day camp programs.  Provides a quality experience to children and parents focused on YMCA core values:  Honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Supervises a group of children
  • Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant, developmentally appropriate and consistent with YMCA values
  • Adheres to program standards including safety and cleanliness standards
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings
  • Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies
  • Maintains positive relations with parents and other staff.  Models relationship-building skills in all interactions
  • Have the ability to help with student’s homework during A+ hours
  • Understand and be in accord with the YMCA philosophy, goals and objectives
  • Be consistent in following program policies and standard operating procedures
  • Ensure the safety, health and welfare of children assigned as well as all other children in the program
  • Relate to the children with respect and understanding and realize you are an adult role model for them
  • Be sensitive to each child’s needs and provide guidance toward positive human development
  • Relate positively to parents, school personnel and others associated with the program
  • Work toward a team spirit and effort among the staff and children
  • Supervise and develop leadership potential with assigned volunteers
  • Instruct children in a variety of activities with enthusiasm and creativity
  • Be on time for work and meetings
  • Attend all general and site staff meetings and training sessions and give input.  Be open to criticism, suggestions and training from other staff
  • Prepare and submit lesson plans on time as requested by the director
  • Take initiative to research and develop new creative activities to enhance overall program
  • Assume responsibility for all facilities, equipment and supplies of the site
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Certifications: CPR, Basic First Aid
  • Child Abuse Prevention Training
  • At least 15 years of age.
  • Patience and the ability to communicate with all ages and levels of students, parents and caregivers, and other Y staff and volunteers

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to plan, lead and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
